Annual Events of Daikakuji
Daikakuji shows a different face in every season. Japanese apricots and cherries in the spring, fresh green leaves in summer, red leaves in fall, and snowscape in winter harmonize with the temple, producing beautiful sceneries.
We have traditional events in each season. Please check the schedule and visit Daikakuji.


January 1st,2nd Shu-sho-e
We ring Joya-no-kane, the watch-night bell, from 11.50PM on December 31th. Visitors can also participate in this event. Entry is from the chokushi-mon gate, which opens at 11.30 p.m. At midnight on New Year’s Eve, we hold a Buddhist service. All visitors are presented with a charm. Do visit Daikakuji and pray for happiness in the New Year.
January 5th Shinnen-haiga-shiki

February 3rd Setsubun-e

February 3rd, the day before the traditional beginning of spring is called Setsubun.
At 10 a.m., a meeting involving the chanting of a sutra to the stars is held at Shingyo-zenden.

The Buddhist party of Manto-e, where Kukai prayed for peace and happiness is held once a year.
Today, we are having is an important Shingon Buddhist party, during which we not only offer many candles but also give thanks to merciful Kukai and enlighten the world.
At Daikakuji, people offer candles and pray for the happiness and health of their families.

October 2nd-4th 2009 Kangetsu-e

Osawa-no-ike is the oldest artificial pond in Japan. Under the Sagano moonlight, it is a beautiful sight to behold.
The Kangetsu-e ceremony originated in the time when Emperor Saga played with nobles on boats in the Osawa pond.
At a moon-viewing party, we observe the harvest moon. On this day, we launch a dragon-headed boat and a bird-headed boat in the pond and hold tea ceremonies. Koto music is played, which recreates the ambience of the Heian period.

November 1st-30th Saga-giku-ten
In the age of Emperor Saga, Saga-giku originally referred to chrysanthemums that grew spontaneously around the Osawa pond. It is now a classic style representing the noble figures of the dynasty; these figures are the sky, earth, and humans. Do visit it and enjoy its beauty.
